Every building breathes. Changes in humidity and temperature cause substrates like concrete or wood to expand and contract. If your tile is installed wall-to-wall without a relief valve, the internal pressure will eventually cause the tiles to tent or crack.
We integrate expansion joints directly into the layout planning phase. These are not just gaps; they are strategic breaks filled with flexible sealant rather than rigid grout. By placing these joints at specific intervals (typically every 20 to 25 feet for interior applications), we allow the floor to move independently from the walls.
Managing Thermal Expansion in Large-Format Tiles
Large-format tile planning requires a different set of rules. While oversized slabs create a sleek, modern look with fewer grout lines, they are more susceptible to thermal expansion. A single large tile has more surface area to absorb heat, meaning it expands more than a small mosaic tile would.
Because there are fewer grout joints to absorb this movement, the stress is concentrated. Using specialized thin-sets and specific joint widths can ensure that your large-format tiles don’t buckle when the sun hits them through a floor-to-ceiling window.
Preventing Lippage with Precision Planning
Lippage occurs when the edge of one tile is higher than the adjacent one. This is a common hazard in tile layout planning, especially with modern rectified tiles. Beyond being an eyesore, lippage creates trip hazards and makes the edges prone to chipping.
To achieve long-term stability, focus on:
- Substrate Leveling: Ensuring the floor is flat within 1/8th of an inch over 10 feet.
- Offset Ratios: Avoiding 50% “brick” patterns on long tiles to minimize the effect of natural tile bowing.
- Leveling Systems: Utilizing mechanical clips during installation to hold tiles in a perfect plane while the mortar cures.
Load Distribution in Commercial Layouts
In commercial environments, tile must withstand more than just foot traffic. Heavy equipment, rolling carts, and pallets apply concentrated pressure. If there are voids in the mortar underneath the tile, the layout will fail under load.
